Ceratopsians (meaning "horned faces") are a group of herbivorous beaked dinosaurs that thrived in the Northern Hemisphere during the Cretaceous period, although they had often unnoticed origins in the Late Jurassic. The last known ceratopsian was Triceratops prorsus, which became extinct in the K-Pg extinction event. The earliest ceratopsians were likely bipedal, perhaps using a quadrupedal stance in less frequent situations. The latest forms, the ceratopsids, such as Triceratops, evolved huge bodies, supported by a strictly quadrupedal stance, with more elaborate frills and horns on their face. The frills are believed to have had lots of functions, such as protecting their necks from predators, display, thermoregulation or supporting of large chewing muscles. Ceratopsians could range from the size of a boar, to the size of an elephant. Triceratops is, by far, the most well known ceratopsian. Many ceratopsians end their name with ceratops, meaning "horned face".
