Polyglyphanodontians are an extinct clade of lizards from the Cretaceous period, known from around 12 genera. They were actually quite of a common and dominant group of lizards in the Late Cretaceous of North America and Asia. The earliest polyglyphanodontians date to the Early Cretaceous, but they became much more common and abundant in the Late Cretaceous. Although mostly inhabiting the Laurasia (the Cretaceous continental junction of the Northern Hemisphere) there are some remains, often dubious, of the group in the Southern Hemisphere, in the Gondwana continent. They were also rather diverse in their forms and shape, such as Chamops, characterized by its large, blunt, crushing teeth, as an adaptation to herbivory or omnivory. Many polyglyphanodontians have a great resemblance to modern teiid lizards, and some were even classified as teiids, although their exact relationship with any modern lizard group is still uncertain.
