Charging is a gameplay mechanic exclusive to Triceratops. It is an attack mechanic that involves using the horns as deadly weapons. Charging can be done at every life stage, but it has more effectiveness as the animal in question grows older.
Charging is achieved by holding down LMB. Just clicking LMB will deliver a basic bite attack, which is less devastating than the charge attack. By holding down LMB, the head of the Triceratops will be lowered down, and when releasing LMB, the head will violently be raised, thrashing with whatever is in the way. Charging is more effective when you run towards your target. Running with your horns lowered down will create enough acceleration, with your trampling damage potentially playing a part on it. Aiming to your target is essential, because a poorly aimed charge will result in less damage than a well aimed charge. Aiming to the center of the target will create most damage.
The charging is a useful fighting mechanic, specially for more mature Triceratops, where their horns are well developed, and their enemies are at a comfortable size for this offensive technique. Hatchlings are born with the abbility of charge, but they will hardly use that for a proper practical function. As juveniles, charging may be used to deflect potential threats, and with the support of your herd, you can attack animals of a considerable size, such as Acheroraptor or Dakotaraptor, though the latter must be taken with caution. Subadults grow larger and most animals are generally avoidable or capable of being taken down, with the exception of the Tyrannosaurus. As an adult Triceratops, you will start to have a chance to take down a Tyrannosaurus, specially if you do a proper charge, where you make the most relevant blows, otherwise, the tyrant may win the fight against you. Adult male Triceratops can use charge, however, to fight other adult males, for the right to leadership of a herd. Adult male Triceratops do not tolerate each other, and males will fight each other with devastating charge attacks. Males can fight to death, and if you are in disadvantage, you may want to call the fight off. However, if you win, the rival male will back off from the fight and leave the herd, passing on the leadership of the herd to you.
