"Bald cypress grow in waterlogged settings, primarily in standing water. They are famous for their "cypress knees", projections of the root system visible above soil or water. These are the primary canopy tree of Bone Butte, where extensive mats of their leaves, sprigs and cones are preserved as fossils."

Taxodium olrikii is a species of trees from the cypress family, Cupressaceae. The genus includes flood-tollerant conifers, commonly found in swamps. Their most notorious characteristic is their very fat trunks, composed by wide roots, projecting from the soil and water, that help carry oxygen to the root systems. Wider buttress indicate the tree was growing on water and developing greatly, while trees grown on land, will have smaller roots. This genus still survives today, consisting of three living species. In Hell Creek, these trees were very common.
